Development of viable micropropagation protocols leading to community participatory floricultural programmes with orchids and anthuriums. Shoot tip, nodal explant and foliar meristem cultures so successfully developed for a number of commercially important orchids and anthuriums in 1980s were subsequently employed for community participatory, self-employment and income generation schemes of rural woman in Parappuram village in Ernakulam district and four village pachayats in Thiruvananthapuram districts. After 4 years of launching the projects, the beneficiaries each supplied with 500-plant homstead unit generated an income of Rs.700-2700 per month, which was considered a decent supplementary income for a family.
