Presently Plant Genetic Resource Division holds living collections of about 1200 taxa of medicinal, aromatic and spice plants. The Bambusetum holding 69 species of bamboos/reeds procured from different regions of Indian subcontinent and Andaman-Nicobar Islands represents the largest bamboo collection in India. The living collections of wild orchids include several endemics and endangered elements from the Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats, Himalayan regions, Northeast India and the Andaman-Nicobar Islands is unique and enumerates 650 taxa. One of the National Gene Banks for select medicinal and aromatic plants constituted by the Governmant of India is being maintained by the PGR Division with holdings of 298 accessions of 25 species. The Seed Bank in PGR Division encompasses an active collection of 986 tropical species and engaged with seed germination / storage studies on selected tropical species. A commercial tissue culture unit is also functioning in PGR Division where multiplication of commercially important ornamentals like orchids, anthuriums etc, banana varieties and other plants of interest are carried out.
