Commercial Tissue Culture Unit
Protocols for 27 Anthurium hybrids, 35 Orchid hybrids / species, 26 new orchid hybrids, 9 popular bananas, Nepenthes khasiana etc
The Commercial Tissue Culture Unit of Plant Genetic Resource Division is working on non-conventional propagation of selected economically important plants. The Unit has contributed to the development of in vitro production protocols for many commercially important ornamental / crop / medicinal plants and generating income through these programmes. Under various micropropagation programmes, production protocols were developed for 27 Anthurium hybrids, 35 Orchid hybrids / species, 26 new orchid hybrids, 9 popular bananas, Nepenthes khasiana – the Pitcher plant etc. In vitro propagation protocols were also developed for nine rare, endemic and threatened species of Zingiberaceae for conservation purpose. In addition to these programmes, we extend assistance for human resource development through short demonstration on tissue culture to about 4000-5000 (per annum) school / college / university students and training to floriculturists / growers / entrepreneurs.
